Nicholas (Nick) Giles:
I have spent around 25 years working in Government to support the sustainable management of fisheries resources. Through work as a compliance Officer, I have developed a great understanding of the marine landscape, stakeholder perspectives, management frameworks, and the ways to get around the rules - or prevent this.
I then transitioned to fisheries management roles, focused on management of commercial fisheries and the associated processes, legislation and policies. I have led management of specific fisheries, including the NSW Lobster, Sea Urchin and Turban Shell, and Inland fisheries, and also worked across the broader commercial fisheries framework including the Commercial Fisheries Business Adjustment Program and Total Allowable Catch and Effort setting programs.
More recently, I have focused on development of NSW harvest strategies, and the broader concepts of managing fisheries resources rather than individual fisheries or sectors - pulling the different parts together under the NSW harvest strategy framework, and also extending this to the Review of the National Guidelines to Develop Fishery Harvest Strategies.
I am an experienced engagement, policy and regulation developer, focused on robust assessment, management and consultation to support effective use and protection of fisheries resources.
