The Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery (SESSF) is facing unprecedented challenges. A perfect storm of climate change, historical overfishing and failure of stocks to recover, economic pressures, and increasing competition for marine space is threatening its long-term viability. To secure the future of this vital fishery, a transformative approach is urgently needed. This presentation will delve into the complex issues confronting the SESSF and outline a strategic pathway toward sustainability and resilience.

By examining the interplay of ecological, economic, and social factors, we will explore innovative solutions to reform and revitalize the fishery. Key strategies include the development of a multi-species harvest strategy, the integration of cutting-edge technologies, and the strengthening of partnerships between industry and government. We will also discuss the importance of a phased transition and the critical role of data and monitoring in supporting effective management decisions.

Through sharing insights and fostering open dialogue, we aim to inspire collaborative action and develop a roadmap for the SESSF's future. By learning from the SESSF experience, we can inform the development of sustainable management practices for other fisheries and contribute to the health of our oceans.
