Over the past decade, significant advances have been made in understanding and conserving the Mary River Cod (Maccullochella mariensis), one of Australia's most threatened freshwater species. This presentation provides an overview of key research milestones, including efforts to quantify demographics, movement patterns and breeding ecology to inform environmental flows; whilst also collecting critical habitat data to inform conversation stocking and habitat restoration. This presentation also highlights the significant benefits that come with Traditional Owner involvement in recovery efforts, emphasizing the unique opportunities that arise from two-way learning. We outline future research priorities aimed at filling critical knowledge gaps and enhancing species resilience, such as our work to establish genetic baselines that monitor recovery progress through environmental accounting. This presentation will emphasize the importance of collaboration, coordination and sustainable funding, guided by a tailored recovery action plan designed to secure the future of the Mary River Cod.
